Blueberry History
Cultivation of blueberries was started in the twentieth century. This work began in 1906 of Americans botanist Frederick Vernon Coville. He was assisted by Elizabeth White, granted his farm in New Jersey and material assistance to work with the blueberries. This collaboration lasted for many years, until his death in Coville F. 1937. By this time the breeding work was involved three wild species: tall - blueberries and blueberry gabled south, and stunted - bilberries angustifolia. On this basis, it received a large number of hybrid seedlings. F. Coville registered 15 varieties. After his death, breeding work was headed by D. Darrow, who during the 1939-1959 of seeds and seedlings remaining by F. Coville, got 15 more varieties. At the same time created a number of experimental stations in the western states, where a common program conducted research and breeding work with tall blueberry. To date, the United States in breeding work included another form: Blueberries "rabbit eye" and, based on grades obtained with hexaploid set of chromosomes.

Later in the U.S. (in 1930) began studies on the introduction of blueberry culture in Canada. Currently, commercial plantations of this plant are located in the Great Lakes region and in south-eastern provinces of the country.

In the 50th years experimental cultivation of highbush blueberry started in several European countries. The research was conducted on a single program, developed by a group of "Culture kind of berry Vaccinium", created by the International Society of Gardeners. We studied the experience of American Scientists, laid their experimental plantation. To date, several countries (Germany, Poland), growing blueberries delivered on an industrial scale and plantation owners to bring their solid income.

In 80th years of XX century, the first blueberry plantations appeared in Belarus and Ukraine. Studies conducted in Russia I. Danilova, showed that in the suburbs can successfully grow early maturing varieties, and with good snow cover, and varieties of the middle and late ripening.
